Pillows
These are not mine, but "my" 8th Grade FACS students made them. Aren't they cute??? It has been really fun teaching them to sew. The coolest thing? The students LOVED it! Who thought 8th grade boys would love to sew? I had my doubts, but they proved me wrong. :) Also... who thought 8th graders would like to crochet? In this day and age????? In the age of ipads, ipods, videogames, etc. etc.... ????? Well, "my" 8th graders loved it! "Chaining" became the coolest thing around... There is still hope in America...!

Random Photo Dump
I like Alison's Friday Photo Dump! I'm not quite disciplined enough to do it every Friday, but every now and again I need to do this. I think it's a great way to document simple things.

Young Hunter
Evan got his first deer early in September. It was a special youth season, and he only hunted for an hour or two and was done! We are happy to have the good meat.
And it led to another project for him and his dad...
Yay for the mighty hunters!

August and September Catch-up
![]() |
We officially have a teenager!(and we couldn't have asked for a sweeter one! We love our boy...) |
![]() |
The cornfield across the road lends a rather "private" feeling to our yard... well, maybe even a bit closed in!? We have enjoyed watching the corn this year, though. It was a bumper crop! (not ours!) |
![]() |
Check it out! It was SO TALL!!! |
![]() |
Mattie loves it! |

Some Studebaker time... |

All these shiny "new" parts! |

Love these "Grandpa Ott's" morning glories on the front porch. |

There's nothing like a fresh fall breeze and hanging Grandma's dishcloths to lower the blood pressure! |

I had an awesome garden this summer. We're still picking some hardy stuff. |

Another digging project. |

There's Nothing Like Family
Here are a few of my favorite photos from our precious time together over the week of the 4th...

The biker gang...
The guys left EARLY for several mornings to fish. This was the first morning right when they returned. Grandpa is showing off Evan's fish...
And then Evan showed it off too! :)

The kids called this "going blue-gilling" Lots of action here! Half the fun was riding out to the dock in the back of Grandpa's pickup.
Mattie had a few quick cool-off-swims in the Mighty Missouri - Chilly! We toured the powerhouses you can see in background.
I got to spend some quality time with my little niece, Maya. She and I made this SandCastle Courtyard together... complete with landscaping. Maya was under doctor's orders not to swim, so I lucked out to have this time with her.... I'd rather build a sandcastle than swim in the lake anyway!!!

Here we are - the whole crew... We are so blessed!

Yard Birds 101
It's kind of a standing joke around here that I want chickens and my DH doesn't. It sounds like I'm not the only woman with this issue. :) Anyway, when we got home from our trip, we discovered that this lovely pair of guineas had made themselves quite at home in our yard. Hubby said to the kids, "Mom has wanted chickens for so long that finally the chickens had to come to her!" I guess it's not quite like having my own chickens (they aren't even chickens for goodness sake!), but we have really enjoyed watching them poke around the yard....

Friends
Lana enjoyed some time with Rex on Sunday evening and Monday after convention. Rex is the type of fella who can make friends with anyone fast!! :)
I loved my quick visits with Monique here and there throughout the convention. It is SO SWEET to have her living on the grounds and so sweet to have her for a friend!

Time to reflect.
The noble work goes on. The Studebaker Body is now back on the frame. The gauges are being worked on. This picture was taken when the body first went back onto the frame.
The following picture was taken on April 21st, when I almost had a panic... Evan seemed/seems to be growing by the week, and Rob and I were going on vacation soon hereafter. QUICK! A picture! They are even at the top... Now I daresay son is taller than Dad. It's really okay :)
Lana finished her first quilt.
My garden got the royal treatment this spring. We added several square feet and put up new fence. By "we," I mean the males in the household put up the fence. Also... check out the cool new compost bins they made for me! As of 5/31, my garden is officially all planted. I was feeling bad about not getting it in early, because so many around here planted in the beginning of May! However, this is the normal time to plant for me, and this is what I could do this year. Something that is NOT normal for me is that I watered my garden this morning! I have never, ever had to water my garden so that things would come up. We are as dry as we've been in the spring since we've lived here. I am NOT complaining. We spent too many springs mucking out a wet basement to complain. I'm actually enjoying it....
Last Friday we invited some special visitors from Rob's work out for supper. Can you tell which ones are the true Italians? These guys always take good care of Rob when he goes over there. I find their expressive-ness very entertaining, and they are most gracious folks. :)
I just took this picture of Evan this afternoon. The fuzzy edges are actually the ropes on my hammock. Evan just finished mowing the whole yard. I really appreciate all the work he does around here. Those of you with little ones - keep giving them jobs to do, and help them feel useful. Later on, they REALLY ARE!!!

The Gift of Life
Mother’s Day dawns. I feel anticipation as I stretch and welcome the day. From my window, the morning looks dewy and clouded. I dress quickly in warm pants, two layers of sweatshirts, and my bright pink mud-boots, and quietly slip out the door.
This has become my tradition. I feel memories of my mom come flooding in, and I embrace them dearly. As I stroll through the quiet morning to my flowerbed, I reflect:
It was nine years ago now. My daughter Lana just turned nine in April, so it’s easy to keep track of the conception of this tradition. I spent that winter and spring in bed and on the couch. I was having premature labor, so my doctor prescribed strict bed-rest. My little toddler boy needed care, and I was unable to do it. My mom came and spent the most of two months with us that winter. At one point she went home to be with my Dad for a break, and then returned to us by train 450 miles. She came bearing two planters with dirt and a few green shoots. “I’m forcing these bulbs, and I thought maybe they would bloom while I’m still here.” she said. In my state of boredom and anxiety, these bulbs were a bright spot. Mom and I watched them together. I don’t recall exactly when they bloomed. Perhaps they were eclipsed by the birth of my beautiful baby daughter who was born healthy, just one month early. Dad came to take Mom home after Lana was born. She chose to leave the planters and bulbs.
Sometime that summer or fall, I must have found time to plant those bulbs in my flower garden. Gardening moments were few that summer, with a two-year old and a baby.
Mom had been in treatment for breast cancer during her time here. She had been diagnosed with stage three cancer six years earlier, and had been through treatments of different kinds. Moments were precious.
Mom passed away in the fall three and a half years later. The following spring, as the sun warmed the frozen ground and little signs of life emerged, I didn’t know there was a gift hidden there. The forgotten bulbs had finally matured enough after their transplanting four years earlier. By Mother’s Day, several beautiful tulips and a drift of grape hyacinths were blooming. These were coupled with pansies grown from seeds she shared with me. That first year, I didn’t dare pick the flowers for fear that I’d damage the bulbs somehow and lose them. The ache in my heart was deep and lone. The second year, as I went out to cut my first Mother’s Day bouquet, the tears flowed freely. I took pictures of the flowers and sent them to my brothers and my dad with the story. I felt close to Mom somehow, and just wanted to share it.
Today the tears have been replaced with warmth in my heart and a feeling of overwhelming thankfulness. My mother cared for me enough to spend two months of her precious moments with me and my family. She took care of us so my daughter would be born healthy and full-term. That gift lives on in the life of my precious daughter. And the simple gift of flowers comes every year at Mother’s Day. As I cut the stems of my tulips from Mom today, I rejoice in the gift of life that keeps on giving and keeps on growing.
5/2012 Note: I wrote this story two years ago. Sadly, last fall a voracious pocket gopher ruined the flowerbed that these precious bulbs were in. Today, I finally got out there to uncover some of the damage. I found just a few thin tulip leaves poking up along with a few hardy grape hyacinths. Perhaps if I give it some more TLC, in another three years or so, they'll bloom again!?
Happy Mother's Day to each of you Mothers. Some of you have lost your mothers like me. You would understand the bittersweet of this day.

The concert
The concert was very fun! It's hard to get good pictures of the whole group, but this is one of Lana and her friend Linnea after the concert.

The Poodle Skirt
This was today's project! Lana has an oldies concert on Thursday.... It would have been pretty embarrassing if the Home-Ec teacher couldn't make her own child a poodle skirt, right???? Or didn't have time???? Some things must be a priority. It was fun. I'll try to post some pix of the concert later if I get some.

The First Drive
Evan and Rob took the Studebaker out for a test drive on Saturday. The new brakes work really well, they tell me! This project continues...
